Conserving wildlife can be fun the eco way with WWF range of puzzles and games

WWF is one of the world’s largest and most respected independent nature conservation organisations, with close to 5 million supporters and a network active in more than 100 countries on five continents. Since its creation in 1961, it has maintained a constant record of success.

Today, WWF runs about 1,300 projects at any one time and employs more than 5,400 people worldwide. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.

In addition to ‘on-ground’ conservation projects, WWF also enters into licensing partnerships with companies to help communicate WWF’s message to as wide an audience as possible and to provide people with smart product choices. Under a partnership with Terra Toys a line of educational and ecological games and puzzles has been developed that meet FSC certification, create awareness of the plight of planet earth and raise much needed funds for conservation work. A percentage of the proceeds from every purchase go to WWF’s conservation work and to date the range has generated over USD$500,000 in donations for WWF globally.

What is the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the most credible global forest certification system. It ensures environmentally and socially-responsible forest management. That’s why WWF recommends FSC to consumers, businesses, policymakers and forest managers. For WWF to enter  into  a licensing  agreement with Terra Toys, it was essential that their  games  and  puzzles  are  developed using  FSC certified wood only.

How does the FSC work?
The FSC is an independent, not for profit, non-government organisation that provides standard setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organisations committed to responsible forestry. Responsible forest managers can demonstrate their high standards by securing internationally-recognised FSC certification.

How does WWF support FSC?
Through the Love Your Forests campaign, WWF is working with leading businesses to actively promote the FSC trademark and  help consumers make the  right choice when  it comes  to reducing  their forest footprint. Through the Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN), WWF is working with leading companies to increase the volume of FSC-certified  timber  and paper  products on the market. WWF encourages consumers to request that their timber and paper products be sourced from logging operations that are not causing  environmental and social harm.

So what’s all the fuss about paper?
WWF encourages consumers to not only look at what’s in the package but also how it’s packaged. All that paper packaging that’s thrown away has a huge impact on the environment.

  • Average world paper product consumption is 54.71 kg per person per year, but with more than 3 times as much in Western Europe and more than 4 times as much in Northern America.
  • 10 per cent of the world’s population consumes over 50 per cent of the paper. A 10 per cent reduction in paper and paperboard consumption in North America and Europe would match one year’s consumption in Africa and South America combined.
  • Reducing wasteful consumption, like overprinting or over-packaging, would also ease the pressure on forests and land use, as paper use grows in developing countries.

The WWF range of games and puzzles is a great example of how packaging can be a positive aspect of the product.

So what’s in the WWF range?
The range of wooden games and cardboard puzzles includes:

–              Two specially shape-cut puzzles which are designed to help develop matching skills and also provide interesting facts about the habitats and species on the reverse. These being Sea Life and the Polar Regions Floor Puzzles.

–              Several wooden classic games of two differently themed tumble towers with a dice to decide the destiny of the next picked block, four memory matching game, and dominoes, all using FSC certified pine wood (plywood and Beechwood) to make these games special.

–              Animal-themed playing cards which are broken down into four different regions/ecosystems: the arctic (clubs), rainforest/jungle (spades), marine (hearts), and savannah (diamonds).

–              Five beautiful 1000 piece puzzles featuring stunning photos from WWF photographers, 4 new 100 piece puzzles and a 12 animal puzzle which shows the animals and their environments as well as a four piece puzzle block featuring wild cats.

All the wood and paper materials used for the range come from FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified forests, including the plywood, pine wood, and beechwood. The toys are packed inside a durable tube, made from recycled cardboard, which has been built to provide safe storage no matter how rough the play is! Materials are further minimised by including the instruction manual and educational content on the tube, clever aren’t they!

The range has been developed with the following objectives in mind:

  1. By working closely with WWF it means that each habitat, such as the Amazon and Arctic, and species such as Tigers and Dolphins, are depicted accurately and can be used as a fun tool to expose children to the world around them and the importance of conservation.
  2. Showing green toys are fun! The range captures the values of WWF in each game design by using real life imagery and offering inspirational stories about WWF and their conservation work.
  3. Providing an educational environment aimed at connecting youngsters to wildlife and demonstrating what can be achieved using sustainable raw materials.
  4. Providing information on the species and facts about them within the puzzles allows children to have a more interesting play experience.

Play makes kids feel safe

Lundby are happy and proud to tell you, that as a part of Micki Leksaker toys, they are embarking on a new partnership with the World Childhood Foundation. Thanks to WCF children have a chance to play, to develop and to feel good.

The World Childhood Foundation (WCF) is a non-profit organisation that supports children who are victims of abuse and sexual exploitation, street children, children in alternative care and families at risk in more than 100 programmes annually in 17 countries. Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden and 14 family foundations founded the World Childhood Foundation in 1999.

The work focuses mainly on the children who are often forgotten; children living on the street, in an institution or in a family where the parents cannot or are not focussed on the needs of the children to grow into the secure adults. Children living in deprivation are at greater risk of violence and sexual abuse.

Play is essential to the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being of children beginning in early childhood. It is a natural tool for children to develop resiliency as they learn to cooperate, overcome challenges, and negotiate with others. Play also allows children to be creative. Children who live in poverty often face obstacles that impede their rights to have playtime, thus affecting their healthy social-emotional development.

The most important aspect is to give strength and support to the adults who are close to the children. It is through play that parents and carers bond with children and in that play time they see the world through the eyes of the children.

The Lundby vision is that every child is entitled to a safe and playful childhood. “Play is so incredibly important for children to develop and feel good. Therefore it feels right for us to be working with a long standing toy manufacturer”, said Paula Guillet de Montoux.

Both Micki Toys and WCF are driven by optimism and they see that it is possible to make a difference, SOS Children’s Villages is one such example.

3c37cac6-170c-4f51-86c1-e02175f71611For 10 years, Micki Toys have worked closely with SOS Children’s Villages by donating a percentage from sales of Lundby dollhouses. SOS build and operate children’s villages, schools, vocational schools, social centres, medical clinics and family strengthening programs worldwide. Children who have lost everything can, with the help of SOS Children’s Villages have a family, security and love. SOS Children’s Villages are in 134 countries and territories.

Lundby are happy and proud to tell you, that as a part of Micki Leksaker toys, they are embarking on a new partnership with the World Childhood Foundation. Micki’s cooperation started when they contributed to the Astrid Lindgren’s Children’s Village in the Central African Republic in 2007-2008. It continued in 2009-2010, with one of the SOS Children’s Village projects in Ghana. Then, by the end of 2014, they contributed to the work of Astrid Lindgren’s second Children’s Village, Noisy, in the Central African Republic. 2015-2017 they worked on another project together with SOS Children’s Villages, this time in the African Republic of Benin.

For over 70 years they have seen how their products stimulated children’s desire to play and learn. Thanks to SOS Children’s Villages and WCF they can do more and see more children play.

Environmentally Responsible
Leolandia is very safety and environmentally conscious. The company was set up with these principals in mind and the cardboard used is made from 60-70% recycled papers. The stock can’t be sourced from 100% recycled papers because it wouldn’t be robust enough.

In saying this, all the non-recycled cardboard is sourced from Responsible Forest Management which is a legal obligation in Poland to re-plant trees for the paper industry and replace what has been taken.

Any glue used is water based and no tools or glue are required in the assembly of any Leolandia product – just your hands!

How it all began …
Rafal1-300x199Rafał Dedyński is the founder and creator of Leolandia. He is the father of three energetic boys. One day, he decided to make a toy for them. He took an unused sheet of cardboard, and made them a house. The boys just loved it! They had a great time playing with it and kept asking him for more toys made of cardboard. And he decided to create more models and that’s how the idea of starting Leolandia came to life.

Initially, he produced larger products and finally realised that smaller was more practical as a birthday or travel gift!

Rafal designs toys that stimulate children’s imagination all the while supporting their fine motor skills development. Assembling and painting the toys also creates the opportunity for children and parents to spend time together. Most importantly, playing with cardboard toys is lots of fun!

Cardboard toys are perfect to boost children’s creativity and develop their manual abilities. Every toy is a real pleasure to assemble, because each toy is unique. To learn more about the range in Australia and New Zealand visit http://www.axistoys.com/Brands/Leolandia

Emotiblocks, encouraging kids to learn about feelings and emotions through play

32350-4It’s that time of year when toy retailers’ websites start listing the hottest – generally expensive – holiday toys. And parents feel pressured to buy them because, well, they’re this season’s must-haves. They often look at current toys and wonder, “Is this toy appropriate for my child?” Getting “inside the box,” and understanding the features and benefits as they align with the abilities of a particular child can be huge challenges. Even professionals and educators serving children – including those with special needs – often lack the time and ability to search for the best products and toys.

MINI-EmotiblocksABLE PLAY is a toy rating system for children of all abilities from the USA-based National Lekotek by doing the research through comprehensive product evaluations relating this information to children’s abilities and skill development.

Emotiblocks has been highly rated by ABLE PLAY as they belong to an affordable, simple and versatile toy range designed and manufactured by Miniland Educational, encouraging kids aged between 2 and 6 to understand about feelings and emotions in early childhood. They are colorful blocks that assemble into different characters that can represent 6 different emotions. With the different hair, face, and body pieces that come together to form the complete figure, there are over 100 different character combinations that can be made. Emotiblocks come with a guide as well as activity cards to prompt playtime when needed.

Developmental Skills

Emotiblocks promoted skills are social and emotional skills (empathy, facial expressions, expressive language, receptive language) spatial concepts, cooperative hand movements, fine motor skills and stacking as well as memory and recall.

Playtime

Communicative (4 stars)

Skills

  • Each activity card comes with an emotion listed in six different languages. These cards can be a chance for children to become exposed to other languages.
  • The activity cards can be used as prompts for children to practice expressive language (output) when talking about the emotions or receptive language (input) as they hear about the emotions.
  • Kids can practice the pronunciation and verbalization of the emotions written in six different languages.
  • Learning another language greatly influences cognitive development, but also teaches kids the value of communicating with others encouraging speech and language skills.

Play Ideas

  • Why does the block feel this way? Pick an Emotiblock and have the child come up with why the character might feel that way.
  • Have the child create a new emotion to add to the activity cards based off of the faces on the blocks.
  • Caregiver can encourage the child to share a time they could empathize with the emotions on the Emotiblocks.

Adaptation Ideas

  • Write the emotion on a notecard to provide a written cue for the child when looking at the picture side of the card.
  • Share both sides of the card simultaneously by scanning one side of the card so that the child can see all content during play.
  • Highlight the language your child speaks so his eyes can more easily find the emotion he needs to focus on. For example, use the same color sticky note to cover the other languages.

Physical (4 stars rated)

Skills

  • Children can work on whole hand grasp and cooperative hand movements as they assemble and disassemble the different Emotiblocks characters.
  • Hand-eye coordination is promoted as kids pick up the components of the characters and snap the pieces together to build the Emotiblocks.
  • Children are working on their fine motor skills as they build the Emotiblocks characters which support everyday tasks like brushing teeth, eating and getting dressed.

Play Ideas

  • Encourage the child to make Emotiblocks representations of familiar people in real life.
  • Have the child stack all of the legs, faces and hair pieces on top of each other to make a tall character tower.
  • Create a die that says “hair”, “legs” and “face” on it for the child to roll and collect the 3 parts to create and complete their character.

Social/Emotional (4 stars rated)

Skills

  • The activity cards and the different faces on the blocks help children become aware of the spectrum of emotions that people can feel and what those emotions mean.
  • The Emotiblocks characters can encourage imaginative play as children create scenarios with the characters and include them into pretend play with other toys.
  • With the different hair and skin colors of the blocks and ethnicities of the kids on the activity cards, children can be exposed to diversity.

Play Ideas

  • The child can give the Emotiblocks characters they build names to go along with their feelings and facial expressions.
  • To spark a conversation about how a child is feeling about a situation or scenario, they can build a character to share their emotion.
  • Kids can practice making their own facial expressions using a mirror to mimic the Emotiblocks characters.

Active learning by combining traditional toys with digital apps

Miniland Educational successfully presented Play Miniland, the new model of learning that promotes the combination of play with real toys and the use of innovative digital resources, at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg. Play Miniland wants to aid parents and teachers in children’s education and entertainment, by making use of digital tools that modern children know so well, while exploring the usage of traditional educational toys that they also need.

The Play Miniland method
Play Miniland is a new game concept that combines the idea of a traditional toy with digital apps for tablets, smartphones and desktop computers. It has 36 educational resources that promote the use of over 200 Miniland specialty toys.

The proposed activities concentrate on the contents set in the school curriculum. The digital content can be used on a computer, SMART board, classroom board or tablet. At home, parents can reinforce their children’s learning, by using Miniland Educational toys and tablets, smartphones or their home computer. All active learning sessions end with a digital game, which aims to reinforce the concepts learned throughout the session.

The aim is to enrich traditional toys by adding innovative content that will then enable additional interaction, and boosting the playing experience of both children and adults. It is also a new way of learning that introduces new educational models in the classroom and which parents can use at home to enhance their children’s learning.

16Esquema_EN_metodo_PlayMinilandPlay Miniland is founded on the combination of the two most important trends in modern-day learning: Active Play and Game-Based Learning. The use of the internet and video games in children’s play can result in parents losing control over the digital content being used by their children. Play Miniland offers parents the certainty of using educational digital games, whereby children can reinforce at home what they have learnt at school.

Active learning through fun activities
Miniland products carry a Play Miniland information card tag on their handle with a QR code. This QR code will take them to www.playminiland.com, which will ask them for the product code of the product they purchased.

Once entered, they specify the age of the child, the theme they want to focus on like Memory Games, Food, Dolls etc. and then content i.e. Vocabulary, Literacy, Science or Maths which is broken down into various topics. Play Miniland will then choose the games that will best help the child. Therefore, Play Miniland is based on active learning through play with real toys, which can be touched, shared and used, in order to learn the concepts worked on in class, but with the motivating effect provided by play.

All these resources can be accessed on the Play Miniland website www.playminiland.com, which is the hub of this innovative learning method. Resources are sorted by age, theme and educational content, and they are presented under different sections, which have been specially designed for teachers, parents and children. Perfect for a travel situation and a great compliment to the games already purchased.

02_Foto_pizarraWith this project, Miniland Educational is at the forefront of specialty toys, by developing a fun-filled learning experience that meets the needs of today’s children, who still have a need of playing with toys, touching and sharing, but who are also accustomed to using and being surrounded by all types of screens. This active learning model allows for individual paces of learning, thus enabling children to learn from their mistakes and increase their self-esteem. This will establish the foundations for their motivation to acquire new knowledge.

Time for Bed with Little Kiwi and Little Koala

Axis Toys appointed Australian distributor to Little + Sleepy range

thumbnails_koalabook-350x350Axis Toys is delighted to launch the Little + Sleepy range into the newborn gifting market in Australia. This beautifully illustrated range of books, soft toys and a sleep Journal – which can be purchased separately or as a kit – are written and designed by New Zealand top selling author Kat Mereweather. Her beautiful depiction of a Sleepy Koala and Sleepy Kiwi allows a wonderful tactile experience for parents and their newborn child to help establish positive reading and sleep routines.

Little + Sleepy is the story two friends with complimentary skills and a passion for bringing new ideas to life. Kat Merewether is a New Zealand illustrator and author, currently achieving massive success with her own range of books about a little kiwi called Kuwi. Anneliese works with NZ artists developing ranges of products for the gift market through her company Tikitibu

Picture5This gift set is a combination of products created to assist newborns with sleep and settling routines. One of the biggest benefits of the Little + Sleepy range is that babies can actually see it.  The first few months of a baby’s life can be pretty blurry, the one thing that they are able to see is the large dark circle that their food comes from.  Up to about 3 months of age, babies’ eyes do not focus on objects more than 8 to 10 inches from their faces.

Sleepy books are designed to engage babies right from birth, with bold black and white graphics that babies can actually see. They are durable, matte laminated board books with a wipe clean surface. Designed to help mum and dad establish really healthy sleep time routines through reading to them from day one, and because the babies can actually see the books they respond to it, so great feedback for new parents.

littlekoalabookFurther down the track, the book is a great first reader particularly for children with dyslexia. The author is dyslexic herself, so she has designed the book in a dyslexic-friendly format, from the fonts to the non-use of any glyphs or serifs that can present reading obstacles. The sentence structure is also designed to be easy to read, using repetition and onomatopoeia rather than forced rhyme, so it is more natural to read aloud and encourage a relaxed transition to sleep.

As babies grow and the story is understood the soft pillow toy becomes a tool for getting little ones to sleep, “Now it’s time for you to sleep so Sleepy Koala can wake up and look over you,” when the book and toy are combined they can be used as a special bedtime trigger.

Designed with love, the Sleepy Journal is the perfect first gift. Right from birth new parents are encouraged to record all the sleep times of babies so they can track where they are at with sleep and feed times. The book has down to earth sleep tips from real mums and encouraging messages that reassure, ground and allow tired parents to giggle a little.

Scribbla – The funky new stationery range for the Tween plus market

Looking for new stationery items with attitude, then look no further than the new Scribbla range from Axis Toys, that offers a variety of items to colour-in using a new range of pens.

As a mother of Tweens, Paula Opfer from Axis Toys noticed that the tween market liked to stamp their own personality on their belongings – iPhone covers, screensavers and doodling all over their pencil cases. This idea was further reinforced by the rapid take-up of the ColourAway colouring-in poster range that allows people to individualise their own posters.

Paula felt that there was an opportunity to develop an Australian stationery range to fulfil not only the current colouring-in craze but also to provide a gift option that was perfect for the tween/teenager market right up to adulthood.

“We knew what pleasure colouring-in gave people and we felt there was an opportunity to provide a range that reflected the Australian and New Zealand lifestyle and love and respect for nature,” said Paula.

“We also felt there was an opportunity to expand the mediums beyond traditional posters to provide further gift options within the lifestyle market in the form of stationery items and even cushions and homewares.”

scribbla rooThe new Scribbla range includes pencil cases are pre-designed with a favourite food, others are illustrated with a quirky character that can be coloured in or not with the fabric pens that are included. Karen Sentonaris, the ColourAway artist, designed the pencil cases for Scribbla using key cheeky critters that appealed to her as her inspiration from “Land Downunder”. This pencil case is black on one side with an additional netted pocket and the other side features this design and comes with two fabric pens to colour it in if you so choose!

The gorgeous Scribbla 12 brush-stroke pens come packed in a simple vinyl pouch and the new line of ball point pens includes pliers, screws, screwdrivers and spanners. The ideas are out there and designed to appeal to the kids, most importantly the range has something for both boys and girls.

The new range of Scribbla stationery items will be ready for the July school holidays. All of the items in the range are practical and more stationery items will evolve out of this range over the coming months.
